Quick answer
Use a temporary number when you need one code and will never hear from the service again. Use a long-term rented line whenever the service can re-verify, send password resets, or lock you out — which includes WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Apple and most financial platforms. The deciding question is not cost, it is whether losing the number would lose the account.
People overwhelmingly buy the wrong one, and it is always the same direction: a one-shot code for an account they will still want in a year.
The rule
If losing the number would lose the account, rent the number. Otherwise, buy the code.
That is the whole decision. Everything below is just applying it.
When a one-shot code is right
- A marketplace signup you will use once.
- A newsletter or download gate demanding a number for no reason.
- A trial account you intend to abandon.
- Anything where password reset runs through email, not SMS.
A single code costs cents. The number is released the moment it lands.
When you need the line
- WhatsApp — re-verifies periodically. Lose the line, lose the account.
- Telegram — recoverable only if you set a 2FA password first.
- Signal — set the registration lock, or the next holder of the number can claim it.
- Instagram, Facebook, X — re-check numbers on suspicious logins.
- Apple ID — ties the number to device trust.
- Anything you would be upset to lose.
The cost comparison people get wrong
A yearly line costs a few dollars a month; a one-shot code costs cents. The arithmetic tempts, but it is a trap: the code buys a number gone in minutes, possibly resold.
Compare against the right baseline: not "code versus line", but "line versus rebuilding an account you no longer control".
