Can I buy just one verification code?

Yes. One-shot codes start at $0.29 at HushSMS and the number is released the moment the code lands. Use them for accounts you will never touch again — but if the service can re-verify later, which includes WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Apple, rent the line instead or you will lose the account the next time it asks.
The longer version
The decision rule: if losing the number would lose the account, rent the number. People err in the same direction, buying a code for cents to register something they will care about in a year. Comparing a code against a line is the wrong comparison; the right one is a line against rebuilding an account you no longer control. A released number re-enters circulation, so the next holder inherits every password reset still pointing at it.
